Hello.  I am a member of the Madison School Board.  I want to learn as much as I can about how our schools are doing, and particularly how well we are preparing our graduates who go on to college.

Our recent graduates who have gone on to college are our best source of information on this topic.  You know better than anyone what your high school experience was like and, taken as a group, you know the most about how well our Madison schools prepare our graduates for college.

I would really appreciate it if you would take the time to respond to the following questions.  I will take your responses into account in my School Board work and share what I learn from you with others on the Board.  That said, please know that I am circulating this questionnaire on my own.  It is not a Madison Metropolitan School District endeavor.

Thanks.

From which Madison high school did you graduate?
When did you graduate from high school?
What college or university do you (or did you) attend?
If you are in college, have you decided on a major, and if so, what is your major?  If you have already graduated, what was your major?
Overall, how well do you think your high school experience prepared you for the courses you have taken in college?
How well do you think your high school prepared you for college-level coursework as compared to your college classmates?  Do you think you were better prepared than they were? less well prepared?  about the same?
Please indicate how well you think your high school experience prepared you to do college-level work in the following areas:

How many, if any, AP classes did you take in high school?
Were there any specific high school classes -- or other aspects of your high school experience -- that you think were especially helpful in preparing you for college?  If so, what were they?
Do you think the high school you attended was more diverse (in terms of of the racial and socioeconomic composition of the student body), less diverse, or about the same as the high schools attended by your college classmates?
To what extent, if any, do you think that your attending a relatively diverse high school was beneficial to you?  Please explain your answer briefly.
In retrospect, how do you wish the classes you took in high school had been different?
Aside from your classes, how do you wish your high school experience had been different?
Some Madison families consider sending their children to private high schools (for example, Edgewood) or other suburban high schools (for example, Middleton, Verona or Waunakee) instead of to our Madison high schools.  Part of the responsibility of a School Board member is to make the case to such families why Memorial, West, Shabazz, LaFollette or East can offer a better overall experience for their children.  Based on your experience, what do you think?  What would you tell a parent wondering whether the high school you attended is a good choice for his or her child?
What else would you like a member of the Madison School Board to know about your experiences as a student in the Madison schools?
Do you think it would be worthwhile for the Madison School District to set up an ongoing means of communication with its graduates?  If so, what do you think would work best?  Facebook group?  Listserv?  Blog?  Something else?
