Fort Monroe is scheduled to be turned over to the Commonwealth of Virginia in September, 2011.

Some people think Fort Monroe should remain untouched and become a national park.  Other people think Fort Monroe should be developed into a complex of homes and businesses, while others think part of Fort Monroe should remain untouched, but it would okay to have limited development there.

Economic development can mean many things to many people.

For some in Phoebus, it’s about planning and building for the future.

For others, it’s about preserving what we have and focusing on businesses that are already here.

Landlords who don't take care of their property have always been a problem and contribute to any neighborhood's blight.

Several suggestions have been made to help control the problem, including hiring more codes compliance inspectors, the creation of an aggressive rental inspection program, and the use of a state law that would allow Hampton to designate a building "derelict" and take legal action against the landlord.

Hampton's Crime and Grime program started over five years ago.

In Phoebus, the group includes codes inspectors, police officers, staff from the Neighborhood Office, our neighborhood commissioner and citizens representing themselves and organizations such as the Phoebus Neighborhood Watch and the Phoebus Improvement League.

Each month, the group meets to discuss issues, walk through targeted neighborhoods where crime and/or grime appear to be problems, and help city staff identify problems.

Have you seen any improvement with this program?

Located at the intersection of East Mellen Street and Willard Avenue, St. Mary Star of the Sea School has served as an educational anchor in Phoebus since 1923.

Despite its long  history and community presence, there are some who still think only Catholic children may attend.

Did you know that any child - regardless of his or her religious faith - may attend St. Mary?
